Promotes teamwork, communication, courage, empathy, generosity. Characters need one another's strengths to complete missions on each increasingly difficult level and finish the dangerous game. Teamwork requires trust, honesty. Other messages include idea that people need unconditional friends (their "team") all through life and that when you feel insecure and lonely is when you most need to reach out to friends. Positive Role Models & Representations Original characters are brave, empathetic, know how to troubleshoot and solve problems and work together as a team, even with new additions. Eddie and Milo are as helpful and adaptable as they can be and learn from past mistakes, forgive each other, and become partners again. Like the first film, many scenes of danger and death (though most of it just temporary). In game universe, characters start out with three lives, and each ultimately gets down to one life after dying in various ways. Some deaths are comically gruesome, like being attacked by a snake, ostrich, or mandrill; plunging to death; or being flattened by a rock. In an opening game sequence, it's explained that a villain killed a character's parents and had his fighters burn and pillage a village. Sad reference to terminal illness. A couple of kisses (both in avatar form and in real bodies) between Martha (as Ruby Roundhouse) and Spencer (as Bravestone). Grandpa Eddie (as Bravestone) kisses a former flame a few times, while everyone else stares at them. Bravestone smolders with intensity. Nonsexual conversation about a eunuch (which a character has to pretend to be) and his legendary "sacrifice" and lack of testicles. Eddie uses the "smolder" to flirt with an acquaintance in real life. Frequent use of "goddamn" and "goddammit, " as well as "s--t" and "holy s--t. " Language also includes "son of a bitch, " "crap, " "hell, " "stupid, " "damn, " "sucks, " "boobs, " "balls, " "oh my God, " "go screw yourselves, " etc. Sony brand displayed a couple of times; other brands briefly shown or discussed include Apple, Instagram. Drinking, Drugs & Smoking One scene takes place in a bar and another at a celebration where adult background characters hold drinks. Stay up to date on new reviews. JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL takes place the year following the events of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Spencer ( Alex Wolff), Martha (Morgan Turner), Fridge (Ser'Darius Blain), and Bethany ( Madison Iseman) are either in college or on gap years. When Spencer comes home for the holidays, he's supposed to hang out with his Grandpa Eddie ( Danny DeVito), who has moved in temporarily while recovering from hip surgery. On the day the Jumanji survivors are supposed to meet up for breakfast, Spencer is conspicuously missing, so the friends head to his house, where they discover the still-broken Jumanji video game in his basement. They figure that's where he is and decide to follow. But something goes awry, and both Eddie and his estranged best friend, Milo ( Danny Glover), are transported into the game, too. They end up as Dr. Bravestone ( Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) and Mouse Finbar ( Kevin Hart), while Fridge is Professor Oberon ( Jack Black), and Bethany is left behind altogether. Martha, at least, is still Ruby Roundhouse ( Karen Gillan). The reconstituted team must find Spencer and also play the game while accompanied by two seniors who are having trouble reconciling their circumstances -- not to mention their new muscular bodies. Is it any good? The return of the likable core cast and the addition of DeVito, Glover, and Awkwafina make this sequel an entertaining twist on the original -- and surprisingly funnier than expected. Hart is quite amusing while speaking in Glover's slower, more deliberate cadence, and even though The Rock's DeVito impersonation isn't always spot on, the gimmick works enough of the time to garner laughs throughout the film. Gillan carries most of the story as Martha/Ruby, who must be steadfast as everyone, including Fridge (in the unathletic avatar of Oberon), acts confused or frustrated. The game aspect isn't as compelling here as the characterizations, because audiences familiar with the first movie know that all will be well, despite the various fight sequences, killer animals, and puzzles to survive. If the first movie was about four high schoolers from different social groups becoming friends, the second one is about two former best pals/business partners (Glover and DeVito) getting one last chance to reclaim their friendship. Sure, there are angry ostriches, mandrills, and homicidal warriors thrown into the mix -- and even a couple of jump-worthy moments. But, at its heart, this franchise is about finding your tribe, your people, your team: the unconditional friends who can help you overcome the toughest odds and the most perilous situations. Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about the violence in Jumanji: The Next Level. Did it change the impact knowing that the characters were inside a game? What about the idea that dying repeatedly could force characters to die in real life as well? Talk about how the cast of Jumanji: The Next Level must use teamwork, communication, empathy, and courage to conquer each level of the game and ultimately succeed in their mission? Why are those character strengths so important in the game, the movie, and in real life? Although Ruby Roundhouse is still in her crop-top and short-shorts outfit, there's less of a focus this time on her sex appeal and more on her strength and abilities. What do you think of the change in perspective for the character? Why do you think so many video games feature "sexy" characters/avatars? Discuss the intergenerational humor in the story. What did the grandpa-age men learn from the college-age teens, and what did the kids learn from the seniors? Set three years after 2017’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, ” a reboot of the 1995 movie, this adventure film brings back the core gang — Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Jack Black — along with a few new faces. As the friends plan to reunite during winter break, one, Spencer, delves back into the Jumanji video game, and the rest of the group has no choice but to follow him. But the game malfunctions, leaving Bethany, another of the friends, in the real world and dragging in Spencer’s grandfather (Danny DeVito) and his old friend (Danny Glover). What’s more, the youngsters don’t have the same avatars as before — which makes for some amusing and not-so-amusing performances. (Hart channeling Glover? Sure. Johnson playing DeVito? Not quite. ) Critics said the movie doesn’t live up to “Welcome to the Jungle, ” but carries enough laughs and tantalizing action scenes to keep you in the game. Image Credit... The fifth season is now available to stream on BritBox and features guest stars including David Morrissey (“The Walking Dead”), Jenna Coleman (“Doctor Who”) and Fionn Whitehead (“Dunkirk”). Watch movie jumanji: the next level series. Kevin Hart, left, Karen Gillan, Dwayne Johnson, Awkwafina and Jack Black star in "Jumanji: The Next Level. " (Hiram Garcia / Columbia Pictures) With movie theaters closed or closing, we are all scrambling for entertainment options. Here are this week's home video releases, featuring recent theatrical movies, an animated superhero saga, British television fare and World War II-era films. Movies “Jumanji: The Next Level” (VOD; also available on Sony DVD, Blu-ray, 4K) Directed by Jake Kasdan from a script he wrote with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, this sequel is an amiable retread passing itself off as an upgrade. It reunites original cast members Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan, and adds welcome new faces in Awkwafina, Danny DeVito and Danny Glover, plus a couple of fresh conceptual wrinkles, two hair-raising action scenes and some unearned lump-in-the-throat sentimentality. It’s not bad for an hour’s entertainment; too bad it runs for two. —Justin Chang “Richard Jewell” (VOD; also available on Warner Bros. DVD, Blu-ray) Powered by some potent acting, Clint Eastwood’s strong and involving drama is the latest example of a genre that is one of Hollywood’s most durable: An innocent unjustly accused is all but obliterated by the indifferent forces of authority. Even before it hit theaters, the story it tells became enmeshed in various controversies, just as the real-life Jewell, falsely suspected in a deadly bombing at Atlanta’s 1996 Olympics, had his story overwhelmed by the imperatives of power elites. The key reason the film works as well as it does is the perceptive nature of Paul Walter Hauser’s lead performance. With a splendid Sam Rockwell and a dead-on Kathy Bates as Jewell's mom. —Kenneth Turan "Black Christmas" (VOD; also available on Universal DVD, Blu-ray) This PG-13 remake of Bob Clark’s 1974 slasher classic follows in the feminist footsteps of its predecessor, while still subverting audience expectations at each opportunity. Fans of the original — and those who like their horror movies deadly serious and brimming with blood — might not love writer-director Sophia Takal’s take, but “Black Christmas” is a fun film that gets its kicks out of literally smashing the patriarchy. —Kimber Myers Also: “Superman: Red Son” (Warner Bros. DVD/Blu-ray, $24. 98; also available on VOD) A direct-to-video animated adaptation of the 2003 DC Comics miniseries, it features the voices of Jason Isaacs as Superman, Amy Acker as Lois Lane, Diedrich Bader as Lex Luthor and Vanessa Marshall as Wonder Woman. Television “Inside No. 9” (available on Britbox) One of TV’s more unusual anthology shows, the British series “Inside No. 9” shuffles between scenarios drawn from a variety of genres, all united primarily by three elements: a darkly comic sensibility, the presence of cocreators Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton, and the promise that at some point in each half-hour episode, the number nine will figure into the plot somehow. The latest batch of episodes — constituting season five — features guest stars like David Morrissey, Jenna Coleman and Fionn Whitehead, in stories that run the gamut from an earthy farce about soccer referees to a cleverly twisty thriller about a plagiarizing magician. —Noel Murray “Crashing: The Complete Third Season” (VOD; also available on HBO DVD; Blu-ray) The third and (for now) final season of the HBO sitcom “Crashing” continues the semiautobiographical story of the show’s creator, Pete Holmes, a comedian trying to forge a career in the challenging, confidence-testing world of stand-up after a soul-crushing divorce. Season three is less about failures and setbacks than it is about success, as Pete starts to build an audience and has to think more about what kind of jokes he wants to tell and why. As always, “Crashing” balances gentle observational humor about relationships with some fascinating insider depictions of how comics think. —Noel Murray From the archives “Their Finest Hour: 5 British WWII Classics” (Film Movement Classics Blu-ray) The U. K. was at the center of the storm throughout World War II, which is why both during and immediately after the war the British movie industry turned out some remarkable movies about the courage and the cost of a devastating global conflict. The box set “Their Finest Hour: 5 British WWII Classics” capitalizes on the recent public fascination with the evacuation of Dunkirk by surrounding the 1958 film “Dunkirk” with four other gripping, mature wartime dramas, including 1942’s “Went the Day Well?, ” based on a Graham Greene story about what might’ve happened if the Germans had invaded a typical English village; 1955’s “The Colditz Story, ” about a daring POW escape; 1955’s “The Dam Busters, ” a white-knuckle thriller about a bombing run; and 1958’s “Ice Cold in Alex, ” in which exhausted evacuees fear they’re in the presence of a Nazi spy. —Noel Murray.
